Welcome!

I’m Robin, a high school Geography & History Teacher, who is also crazy about tourism education. The purpose of this blog is to share what I have learned from my own experiences as a 7-12 educator over the past 24 years. You might have a very different grade and subject niche and therefore different priorities and needs, but I do hope there is something here that helps make teaching better for you and your students.

Feel Good Friday is my favorite day of the week, and the students too. Not just because there are two days of freedom ahead, but because it’s Feel Good Friday!

Feel Good Friday was born out of the desire to let the students relax whilst being active in a community setting. As I had left my ginormous school of 2,200 students and joined a very small school with less than 300 students, my small Geography class of 8 became almost family. This particular course was not too academically driven, but we were still learning about geographic concepts and theories about topics like global warming and migration. It was hard for these kiddoes to keep still sometimes, so I taught in chunks. The teaching part is for another day. Today is about the Friday’s.

First of all, we always started the week with a vote on the theme for Friday. A theme was necessary for our use of Pinterest, topics of discussion and even possibly our beverages. I am talking juice boxes here. A small expense for me.

Throughout the week, students debated and argued what our pinning theme on Pinterest should be. This could be anything that was unrelated to our course, but had to be positive and feel-good in nature. Usually I started giving them some ideas like: best movie, worst movie, all things space, coolest buildings, funniest memes about Halloween etc. This started so much discussion, and the phones disappeared!!!

However, be warned… one time my kids wanted to pursue images of the “Worst Rulers in the World”, as we had been discussing that the following year they would be taking History instead of Geography- a far cry from our positive themed rules. And I relented. WARNING: Don’t underestimate their power to find images of you. Hence…

Hopefully you have guessed I’m the image on the left:(

If you think this is an activity that your students would really like, you will need:

  • Teacher Pinterest account. You can find out how a www.pinterest.com or www.pinterest.ca
  • Student Pinterest accounts
  • Juice boxes/ granola bars- anything that makes it a special day apart from every other day
  • A voted upon theme
  • 15 minutes out of your regularly scheduled lesson

Happy pinning!
